GLOBAL HEALTH AND
THE FIGHT AGAINST AIDS

In 2020, we continued our work in the fight against AIDS and other pandemics. Following Spain's announcement of the expected return to the Global Fund, during 2020 we worked to secure the first payment to that agency and engagement with it - something that is all the more important in the context of the pandemic. In addition, we work side by side with the Global Fund to denounce the new economic and logistical needs that Covid-19 was generating.

WE TOOK PART IN THE "JOINT SPANISH COOPERATION RESPONSE STRATEGY TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS"

We worked together with the Spanish development sector's main stakeholders and this was a great opportunity to ensure that Spain's commitment to the Global Fund was reaffirmed and that an initial payment was committed - as shown in the final document of the "Joint Spanish Cooperation Response Strategy to the COVID-19 Crisis". In 2020, the Spanish government made an initial €10m payment and included a further €30m in the 2021 budget.

WE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE GLOBAL FUND

During the year, we coordinated intensively with the Global Fund Secretariat to provide them with accurate information about Spain and to help them get back on track in their discussions with the new government. We worked with them on the best approach to engaging with the Spanish government in designing and developing the Global Fund's strategy.

A large part of our work also involved connecting the Global Fund's activities with journalists in Spain, to give voice to their very important work and the new challenges with the arrival of Covid-19. In the run-up to World AIDS Day, and thanks to this work, we were able to secure space for Francoise Vanni, the Global Fund's director of external relations, in different major media outlets such as El Periódico, RTVE (TV), RNE (Radio) and SER (Radio). We also published an interview in our website.

WE CONTINUED TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIGH-LEVEL OFFICIALS AND SENT A LETTER OF THANKS TO THE GOVERNMENT

The arrival of Covid-19 posed a number of challenges in the fight against AIDS and we knew it was a core issue that needed to be included in all our work. We therefore include as part of our advocacy work the extraordinary effort of the Global Fund to fight against Covid-19 and the way that Spain's contribution to the Global Fund makes us an important actor among global health advocates and in playing a key role in the international fight against coronavirus.

Salud Por Derecho held fluid communication with high-level officials of the Spanish government, which gave us the opportunity to advise them on the importance of the role of the Global Fund and also to support the Global Fund Secretariat in their discussions with the Spanish government.

In October 2020, we also sent a joint letter with MSF, thanking the government, and highlighting the importance of Spain's involvement and asking for new budgets and commitments to reaffirm this commitment.

WE HIGHLIGHTED THE RISKS OF HIV AMONG WOMEN AND YOUNG GIRLS

In March 2020, we published an article in ElDiario.es discussing the disproportionate risk of HIV among women and adolescent girls, and the Global Fund's work on this issue. And on World AIDS Day, we published an article in which we reviewed this problem but incorporated the new Covid-19 framework, which - again - excessively punishes young and adolescent girls, putting them at greater risk of HIV infection.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GLOBAL FUND

In September, following the publication of the Global Fund's annual report, in which it reviewed its impressive results from the previous year and analysed the risks of the new pandemic, we posted a text on our website, analysing the document and highlighting the importance of the multilateral agency's work and the urgent need for funding in the face of the new challenges.

WE SENT A DOCUMENT TO MPS

During the year we put a lot of working into highlighting the added complication that the fight against the Covid-19 virus has meant for the HIV pandemic, and the enormous need for extra funding that would be required in order not to waste years of huge amounts of effort and progress. Accordingly, on World Human Rights Day (10 December) we sent our new document The Impact of Covid-19 in the Fight Against AIDS to Spain's MPs.

WE ANALYSED THE WORLD AIDS CONFERENCE: AIDS 2020

As a result of Covid-19, the World AIDS Conference that had been due to be held in San Francisco (and which we were going to attend) was instead run online. At the end of the Conference, we posted a review on our website including an analysis of the main messages that came out of the event.
